It took a very long time for mankind to separate the concept of number from the objects being counted. On five-thousand-year-old Sumerian administrative tablets we do not yet find abstract numbers; indeed, the same numerical symbol stands for 10 or 6 depending on whether it is used for counting sheep or sheaves of grain.
